The Marco Polo Programme: Developments in intermodal transport policies.

Description

International cargo flows are growing rapidly what brings a new challenge to the members of European Union. EU has to heighten old transport policies to a new level and satisfy growing transport needs. Road space is limited, global competition is high and customers expect even shorter delivery times. Additionally environmental issues regarding expanding transportation have to be kept in mind. In order to avoid blocked roads and increased delivery times a programme has been developed, namely Marco Polo Programme, which supports modal shifts.

On the left side you find the background information of our topic and an introduction to our case study. The background information consists of three parts:

- Intermodal Transport gives you a brief summary what intermodality is.

- European transport policy focuses on the current European Union's transport policy published in the White Paper of 2001.

Marco Polo Programme describes a programme introduced by the EU to support intermodal initiatives and alternatives to road transport in the early stages.

- And finally AIN project gives you an insight into the project we picked as an example which is financed by the Marco Polo Programme of the EU.
